Example of "Clustering" & Virtual Reel Mapping

Virtual Reel ------------------------ Actual Reel

Note: Virtual Reels can be any size and are usually much larger, such as 64, 256 or even 512 stops.

Mouse over the virtual reel example and see how only the first 9 stop positions on the 32 stop virtual reel are mapped to the 22 stop positions on the actual reel. See how the rest are all mapped to blanks so they come up under a payline much more often than a winning symbol. The actual reel may give an appearance that there are 4 out of 22 chances of a seven coming up under the payline, but the odds are really 3 out of 32 chances a seven will come up under the payline. See how "clusters" of blanks positions on the virtual reel are mapped to a blank position just above or below a jackpot symbol on the actual reel. This type of programming and mapping ensures an abundance of near-miss effects. This is a very simplistic example of a mapping process but illustrates how this process distorts the true odds of winning and produces lots of programmed near-misses.
